Obesity in kids has become such a problem here in the United States. We have such overweight, sick kids! 1 in every 3 kids is now considered overweight or obese. And, that number is growing. I know we as parents are concerned, but have we really taken time to consider the ramifications of our busy, go-go-go lifestyle? Because we are so busy we have less time to prepare nutritious, home cooked meals. Quick and easy is the reality of our society.
In the past our pediatricians dealt with chickenpox and tennis elbow and now, sadly, it is diabetes, heart-attack risk and osteoporosis. I don't know about you, but I was shocked when I read this and learned the reality of where our kids are headed. I recently was visiting with a local Pasco family practice doctor and she confirmed my worst fears. She is currently treating some obese kids, among them a 200 lb 12-year old and a 300 lb 14-year old. She stated that if they continue on their current path they are likely to be diagnosed with diabetes before they are 20, be on dialysis in their 30's and be experiencing end stage diabetes complications by their 40's - such as blindness, amputation, etc. Wow! What kind of life is this for our kids?
So, what can you do about it? You can each pick a kid or two within your spere of influence and begin to have an impact in their lives. Whether it is a neighbor kid, grandkid, niece, nephew. We all know someone. Encourage them to make healthy choices. Maybe help supply healthy snacks for their busy lifestyle. Maybe you can help by not contibuting to their unhealthy choices by giving them candy and sweets for the holidays. Volunteer to take them to gymnastics, swimming or soccer. The exercise goal for our kids is 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Yet many kids prefer to stay inside and play their computer games or watch TV. You can make a difference in a childs life. Make that choice now and help a child exercise and eat healthy. Together we can change lives, one child at a time.
